The TroutFitter Fly Shop

The Missouri river below Holter Dam is a world class fishery that provides anglers with the opportunity to catch large wild trout on a very consistent basis. The river fishes well almost all season long but can be spectacular following runoff in early summer. This is big water with big fish and epic hatches. Unlike most of the nearby freestone rivers, the Missouri has only a few different species of insects. The hatches that do occur however are prolific. Caddis, PMD’s, and Trico’s are the main food sources for trout during the prime fishing season and the hatches can be intense enough to drive anglers to distraction.

Wade fisherman have the rare chance to fish large water without risking limb and life as the Missouri’s gentle flows and many side channels  provide lots of room to get around and spread out.  For those who prefer to float, boats are available for rent and guides are available for as many days as you’d like. Many first time visitors will choose to hire a guide and float the river on day one and then use what they learn to strike out on their own. There are many state fishing access sites from Holter dam to Cascade and it’s also easy to park on the side of the road and access the river in many other places as well. In fact, one the most underrated aspects of the Missouri is the easy and plentiful

access for wade fisherman.

On the rare occasion the Missouri’s flows create difficult fishing conditions, visiting anglers can hop in the car and find themselves at the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, Beaverhead in just a couple hours.
